Youth sports background check requirements by state
As of 19 Dec 2025, Little League's compiled page lists 13 states as requiring background checks for volunteers in non-school youth sports or youth activities: Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Utah. The rules differ on who is covered, what kind of check, and how often it must be renewed. Governing bodies like Little League require annual checks even where state law does not.

Which states require youth sports background checks?
The table repeats Little League's compiled state-law page. It is a pointer to that page, not a confirmation that the list is complete or current, and not a statement of what each law requires. What's different in Florida, Pennsylvania, and Colorado?
Little League's compiled page summarizes these three states as follows. Verify each one against the primary statute before you use it. They are not prescriptions, and they are not a claim that any product meets the standard.
- Florida. A Level 2 fingerprint screening rule for youth coaches has been in force since 1 Jul 2026. Bill and statute numbers, covered roles, and the current text: [UNKNOWN: verify on flsenate.gov / FDLE]. Apply2Volunteer does not process fingerprint, FDLE, or Level 2 checks.
- Pennsylvania. PSP, child-abuse, and (in some cases) FBI fingerprint clearances on a 60-month cycle, and a note that failure to require them is a misdemeanor, appear on that compiled page. Statute citation: [UNKNOWN: counsel review]. Apply2Volunteer does not process FBI fingerprint clearances.

What do governing bodies require?
- Little League publishes an annual background-check requirement for managers, coaches, board members, and regular volunteers, plus the Little League Official Volunteer Application. See Little League's state-law page.

Name-based vs fingerprint checks
A name-based check uses identifiers a screening company collects and searches databases and, sometimes, county courts. A fingerprint check goes through a state agency or a Livescan vendor. Apply2Volunteer does not process fingerprint checks. If your state or governing body requires fingerprints, use that agency's channel.
How do leagues collect applications and consent?
Collect a short interest form first. Send the longer application, and any check, only to people you approve. That is a design recommendation, not legal advice, and it is not guidance for working with minors.
